The bite doesn’t stop when summer arrives.
In fact, if you’re willing to embrace a warm Wisconsin day, summer can produce some incredible action. The fish are active, the weather is beautiful (mostly), and there are far fewer boats on the lake than during the spring frenzy on the rivers. Better yet, the bite continues right into early fall, giving us months of excellent fishing opportunities. Summer patterns on Lake Winnebago can be very productive, and walleye fishing often improves again as water temperatures begin to cool in September.
If You Can Stand the Heat…
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that fish don’t mind the heat nearly as much as people do.
On many summer guide trips we’re catching fish all day long. We will start earlier to avoid the hottest of hots. Walleyes, freshwater drum, white bass, perch, and the occasional bonus species can keep the rods bending and make for an action-packed trip. Some days we catch numbers. Other days we connect with some really nice walleyes. Either way, there’s rarely a dull moment.
The best part? You don’t need to be an expert.
